Particle Size Analysis of Materials for Industry and Research |
| |
|
Particle size analysis of materials can be performed between 40 nm to 2000 microns (using laser diffraction on liquid samples) and 1 nm to, say, some microns (system dependent) using PCCS (photon cross correlation spectroscopy). Image analysis can be performed on images from TEM or SEM or Optical microscopes.
Methods
- Disc Centrifuge - High resolution particle size distribution of nano and sub-micron particles.
- Enhanced Laser Diffraction - Coulter LS230. Optical modelling allows full Mie theory implementation
- PCCS (photon cross correlation spectroscopy) is performed using a Sympatec 'NanoPhox' instrument - useful for nano-dispersions
- Image analysis - the size of particles analysed is dependent on the magnification of the microscope or lens used.

Applications of Particle Sizing
- A knowledge of the particle size distribution can help assess the processability of materials.
- Attrition/coagulation or other processes can be followed to ensure that products are within specification.
- Analysis gives confidence to results of trials aimed at monitoring process changes
- Allows product specifications to be assigned to achieve correct technical performance
- Laser diffraction is a UKAS-accredited technique. Membership of Proficiency Testing Schemes means our customers can have confidence in the results generated
The MSG advantage
- Bubbles and emulsions may be sized unlike other methods
- In Laser Diffraction, modeling enables full distribution data to be obtained including sub-micron particles
- Large numbers of particles are analysed ensuring representative data
- Laser Diffraction is a UKAS-accredited technique
- Theory and possible artifacts are well understood by the laser diffraction method
- Parallel microscopy with image analysis work regularly undertaken to further understand the size data obtained
