Combinatorial chemistry and high throughput technologies help make research and product development faster and more efficient. Using these approaches its possible to prepare vast numbers of samples, under widely different processing conditions, very quickly. However, material sample preparation is only half the story, the samples have to be tested, or screened, in order to assess their utility for the target application, and this presents real challenges for measurement science. This is where Intertek MSG expertise can help.
Intertek MSG has extensive experience in the development of novel screens to assess chemical, physical and applications properties, with a throughput to meet the demands placed by modern robotic sample preparation. These screens range from simple pass/fail results for a specific application, through to detailed characterisation of complex properties. In the extreme, this involves transforming an established laboratory method into a high-throughput variant, without loss of information or precision, to produce meaningful absolute results. |

So, for example, using image analysis we can screen whether a piece of plastic fractures under a given impact (pass/fail), or we can measure absolute mechanical properties (modulus, toughness, adhesion etc). The trick is doing the latter quickly enough! As another example, we could screen foam for whiteness, or we could measure the bubble size distribution - it all depends on exactly what information you need to develop the product.
