Dr. Steve Norval
BSc PhD
X-Ray Diffraction
Steve obtained his PhD from Glasgow University in 1974 before a brief spell in research and teaching at University of East Anglia. He joined ICI in1976 to work on basic research and development of new catalyst systems. He took charge of the Wilton X-ray Diffraction and Electron microscopy facility in 1980 and has continued working in this area since then with an emphasis on XRD.
Research on heterogeneous catalysts and inorganic materials has received much of Steve's attention over this time, but polymers (synthetic and natural), foods and other organic materials are of increasing importance.

Special research interests include in situ studies of process-related transformations and new methods for characterising microstructure by XRD. Steve has been very actively involved in the British Crystallographic Association (recently as Chairman of the Industrial Group), is a member of the International Centre for Diffraction Data, and represents the UK on the committee writing European Standards for XRD.
