Vibrational Spectroscopy Analysis Techniques and Capabilities

Intertek laboratories provide vibrational spectroscopic analytical testing for identification of client components, unknowns and trace materials. A significant range of materials and products are tested by the Intertek spectroscopy lab network. Infrared spectroscopy (IR Spectroscopy) uses the infrared portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. IR spectroscopy is used by Intertek laboratories to investigate the composition of samples for clients in many industries and markets.

Vibrational Spectroscopy Analysis Overview

NIR Near Infrared Reflection:

  • Near-Infrared (NIR) spectroscopy measures reflective or transmissive properties of specific wavelengths of near-infrared band light in a sample. Measurement of the spectra reveals samples properties and composition. NIR analysis predicts chemical and physical characteristics based on comparison of spectra to spectral data of known samples.


ATR, Attenuated Total Reflection, ATR-FTIR:

  • ATR is a spectrophotometric technique using optical interface energy reflection of two media having different refractive indices. ATR has a specificity for organic surface groups with a sampling depth from tenths of a micrometer to micrometers. ATR testing techniques include ATR-FTIR, Micro ATR, and Grazing Angle ATR for qualitative and quantitative analysis.
