Vibrational Spectroscopy Analysis Techniques and Capabilities

Intertek laboratories spectroscopic analytical testing for identification of components, unknowns and trace materials. A significant range of materials and products are tested by the spectroscopy lab network. Infrared spectroscopy (IR Spectroscopy) uses the infrared portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. IR spectroscopy is used by Intertek laboratories to investigate the composition of samples for clients in many industries and markets.

FTIR Spectroscopy:

Raman Spectroscopy:

  • Raman measures the interaction of light with matter. Laser light is used as the source, and causes the atoms in molecules to vibrate. Analysing the scattered light provides a fingerprint and reveals information about chemical structure and physical state of samples. Confocal Raman microscopy is available in Intertek laboratories in the USA and Europe.

FAR-IR:

  • Laboratory spectroscopy using long-wavelength infrared light to identify and characterize target molecules.

DRIFTS NIR/MID:

Vibrational Spectroscopy Analysis Overview

NIR Near Infrared Reflection:

  • Near-Infrared (NIR) spectroscopy measures reflective or transmissive properties of specific wavelengths of near-infrared band light in a sample. Measurement of the spectra reveals samples properties and composition. NIR analysis predicts chemical and physical characteristics based on comparison of spectra to spectral data of known samples.

ATR, Attenuated Total Reflection, ATR-FTIR:

  • ATR is a spectrophotometric technique using optical interface energy reflection of two media having different refractive indices. ATR has a specificity for organic surface groups with a sampling depth from tenths of a micrometer to micrometers. ATR testing techniques include ATR-FTIR, Micro ATR, and Grazing Angle ATR for qualitative and quantitative analysis.

XRF, X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometry:

  • XRF provides determination of major and trace elements in solids. XRF spectrometers are either wavelength-dispersive spectrometers (WDX or WDS) and energy-dispersive spectrometers (EDX or EDS). EDX spectrometers are smaller, often portable and provide faster measurement. WDX resolution and detection limits are superior.
