Phthalates Testing
Laboratory Analysis for Phthalates Detection

Intertek analytical testing laboratories provide trace level detection and phthalate screening of polymers and other materials and products, including toys, for the presence of phthalates. Phthalate testing labs are located in Asia, Europe and North America, with analysis conducted by experienced chemists using state-of-the-art instrumentation.

Intertek laboratories test for related phthalate chemical compounds such as:

  • 2-ethylhexyl phthalate
  • benzyl phthalate
  • diallyl phthalate
  • diethylhexyl phthalate
  • diethyl phthalate
  • dibutyl phthalate
  • dioctyl phthalate
  • dimethyl phthalate
  • diisononyl phthalate
  • diisodecyl phthalate
  • diisobutyl phthalate
  • dicyclohexyl phthalate
  • ethylhexyl phthalate and many other phthalate compounds are tested by Intertek laboratories to trace detection levels.

The use of certain phthalates in many consumer products is banned in various countries, including in Europe by EEC directive 2005/84/EEC and other regulations. Products tested for phthalates include toys, consumer goods, plastics, polymers, components, liquids and more. The European Parliament voted in July 2005 to:

Ban the use of three phthalate plasticisers in all children's toys and childcare items:

  • di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), CAS No 117-81-7
  • di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP), CAS No 84-74-2
  • butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP), CAS No 85-68-7
  • Ban the use of three other phthalates in toys and childcare items that can be put in the mouth by children:
  • diisononyl phthalate (DINP), CAS No 28553-12-0
  • diisodecyl phthalate (DIDP), CAS No 26761-40-0
  • di-n-octyl phthalate (DNOP), CAS No 117-84-0.
  • According to the EU decision, plasticized materials in toys and childcare articles containing these phthalates in concentration of greater than 0.1 % shall not be placed on the market within the EU.
