Fuel Oil Quality and Stability

Fuel stability testing measures P-value and P0/Frmax. The results are used to assess whether a fuel product is a straight-run or cracked material, and offers assessment the stability of a fuel oil blend. This test is important for petroleum refiners and fuel oil traders.

What is Fuel Oil Peptization Value?

The P-Value or Petpization Value test allows buyers and sellers of Residual Fuel Oil to determine the stability reserve of a finished fuel product as well as help traders determine whether their product is 'Straight-Run Residue' or derived from 'Cracked Fuel Oil'.

Two values are needed for this :
A. P value
B. P0/ Frmax

A. The P-value of an oil provides information on:
1. stability
2. stability reserve required for refinery process (thermal cracking) control purposes

B. P0/Frmax value is required to predict whether the oil sample can be blended with other products without stability problems.

This can be summarized as below:
• P0 > Frmax : Fuel is stable
• P0 < Frmax : Fuel is unstable
• P0 = Frmax : Fuel is borderline

Fuel Oil Test Definitions
P-Value: Peptization of asphaltenes in asphaltene
containing oil systems. The critical cetane dilution is the number of millilitres of cetane with which one gram of the sample can be diluted until it just does not flocculate the asphaltenes.

P0: P0 is defined as the peptising power of the oil phase, or solubility number of maltenes. It is expressed in units of Flocculation Ratio (FR). A P0 value of e.g. 60 means that the peptising power of the oil phase is equivalent to 60 %vol 1-Methylnaphthalene in the
diluents.

Frmax: Frmax expresses the maximum flocculation ratio obtainable at a theoretical indefinite
dilution. In simple words: it denotes the
minimal required peptising power, needed by asphaltenes, to just stay peptised. A Frmax value of e.g. 45 means that the asphaltenes need an oil phase with an minimum peptising power (P0) equivalent to 45 %vol 1-methylnaphthale in diluents.

P0/Frmax ratio: The ratio of P0 and Frmax is expressed as the P-ratio, which in theory is equivalent to the P-value.
