Microscopy Laboratory

The NWTC UK laboratory provides analytical techniques for visualising and measuring microscopic features. Nanoscale techniques include SEM/EDXA, TEM (cryo & freeze-fracture), AFM, Interference microscopy, Light microscopy.
Optical light Microscopy:
  • Available imaging modes include transmission, reflection, polarisation and DIC. These instruments are valuable in studies of phase structure, morphology and particle size and structure.

Transmission Electron Microscopy:
Hair Cross Section - Optical Microscopy
Cross section of hair showing presence of henna
Scanning Electron Microscopy:
  • SEM, SEM/EDX; equipped with EDX. SEM is used for topographical characterisation of a diverse range of materials.

Atomic Force Microscopy:
  • AFM allows for the study of surface topology on a nanometre scale.
