Emission Control, Remove and Degrade Contaminants using Bioscrubbing Solutions

Intertek Polychemlab experience and expertise helps client research and evaluate the feasiblity of using bioscrubbing technologies to remove and degrade emission contaminants.

Bioscrubbing is used in food processing facilities, chemical plants, paint spraying facilities and the livestock breeding industry among others.  A major advantage of bioscrubbing is that the majority of emission compounds are converted into carbon dioxide and water, without any venting being required or waste being generated. On top of this, where stack gas pollutant concentrations are low (up to about 1 g/m3), the technique is highly cost effective.

Low-level emissions of a number of components often remain unavoidable. Most gas cleaning techniques are unable to remove low concentrations in an efficient manner. This is where bioscrubbing can help.

Bioscrubbing operates by removing components from stack gases by means of micro-organisms. The micro-organisms reside on package material in a column through which water recirculates. If properly designed, the system is capable of removing a wide variety of components, even poorly water-soluble ones, with high efficiency.

Bioscrubbing is the ideal technique for removing components such as the following:

  • Hydrocarbons
  • Aromatics, BTEX and the like
  • Odorous components
  • Ammonia

Bio-Scrubbing Technical Feasibility Consulting and Determination:

The technical feasibility of bioscrubbing depends on a number of factors including temperature, the component properties and consistency of feed rate and concentration. Systems must be designed for these operating conditions. Intertek has know-how and experience for the removal and degradation of a number of contaminants.

To support client projects, Intertek runs pilot tests and bench-scale tests for clients to investigate system performance for user applications. Intertek can quickly tell you whether bio-scrubbing is suitable for your particular problem and inform you of its cost and benefits.
