Process Analytical Technology (PAT) combines analytical chemistry with process technology. PAT installations are used world-wide for process optimization, asset control, safety of plants and environmental measurements. The primary goal is a better management of the plant performance.
Introduction
In several chemical processes, volatile components are dissolved in a liquid under high pressure and/or low temperature. To control this process, the composition of these mixtures is analyzed with an on-line process gaschromatograph.
Challenges
The major challenges for the application are:
Callibrating the process-gas chromatograph. This has to be carried out with a mixture of the concerning component(s) in a liquid. Preparation and storage of such a mixture in traditional containers is very difficult.
Storage time is limited and the mixture will remain stable only if stored under constant pressure. If the necessary precautions are not taken, the mixture composition will change overtime (during use).
