Polymer testing by NMR and High resolution NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy) provides detailed structural information on soluble polymers. Polymer charateristics gained from
NMR analysis provides an extensive range of useful data. Intertek scientists with years of NMR expertise are available for routine and advanced polymer related research and analytical projects. |
NMR polymer analysis helps understand:
- Polymer chain branching
- Monomer type
- Monomer level
- Monomer distribution
- Molecular weight
- Molecular end-groupings.
As an example of applying NMR to polymer testing, the 13C NMR is used to determine the nature
of unknown polyethylene, HDPE, LDPE, LLDPE. The types of branching
and their abundance are determined.
NMR analysis shows a 13C NMR spectrum of an LDPE which contains
a number branch types (methyl, ethyl, butyl, pentyl, hexyl and longer),
and of an LLDPE, prepared from ethylene and hexan-1 which contains
only butyl branching. From this information, the type of polymer was identified
by our NMR lab for the client.

Polymer types analysed by NMR:
- Polyethylene, Polypropylene
- Ethylene Copolymers
- Propylene, Vinyl Acetate
- Polyisobutene, Polyketones, Polyurethanes, Polyesters
- Polyalkylene, Glycols
- Phenolic Resins
- Silicones, Polyimides
- HDPE, LDPE, LLDPE
- ... and more.
NMR specialists are prepared to discuss your polymer characterisation project and various analytical approaches available. NMR techniques include 300 mHz, 500 mHz, Fourier Transform Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (FT-NMR) Spectroscopy and LC-NMR capabilities.
