ULSD Testing

ULSD Laboratories in the USA and Canada

Intertek fuel laboratories in the USA and Canada are accepted by the US EPA to perform sulfur (sulphur) determination of Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel, offering the largest network of laboratories qualified to perform EPA qualified low sulfur analysis.

  • Intertek offers diesel fuel sampling and mailing kits so that you can take samples and ship them to the nearest EPA qualified Intertek laboratory for rapid test results. To learn more about the ULSD sample kit program, please visit here.

Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel Test Methods:

  • ASTM D5453: Total Sulfur in Light Hydrocarbons, Motor Fuels and Oils by Ultraviolet Fluorescence
  • ASTM D3120: Trace Sulfur in Light Liquid Petroleum Hydrocarbons by Oxidative Microcoulometry
  • ASTM D6079: Diesel Fuel Lubricity by the High Frequency Reciprocating Rig (HFRR)
  • ASTM D2622-03: Sulfur in Petroleum Products by Wavelength Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence
  • ASTM D7039-04: Sulfur in Gasoline, Diesel Fuel by Wavelength Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence
  • ASTM D2624-02: Electrical Conductivity of Aviation and Distillate Fuels
  • Intertek USA and Canada laboratories are uniformly standardized to maximize analytical precision
  • The EPA approval process requires analytical methods to meet accuracy and precision criteria in order to be accepted.

ULSD Expertise:

Intertek is a leader in Ultra low sulfur diesel fuel testing. Seminars by Intertek personnel along with major ULSD producers have been provided in conjunction with the EPA to industry conferences. Intertek participates in the EPA’s sulfur round robin program. Intertek lab analyses help determine the enforcement tolerances which will be allowed.

About Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel:

Sulfur (Sulphur) in diesel fuel has been lowered to enable new pollution-control technology. The EPA requires a 97 percent reduction in the sulfur content of highway diesel fuel from 500 ppm to 15 ppm. ULSD fuel requirements started to took effect in 2006.

Sulfur Analysis and ULSD:
Under the EPA performance-based test method approach adopted in the diesel sulfur rule, multiple sulfur test methods are allowed. Methods qualify for approval provided they meet specified performance criteria under the Performance Based Testing Criteria in 40 CFR 80.584. Reference 40 CFR 80.584 and CFR 80.585
